Kościół pw. Błogosławionego Jerzego Popiełuszki w Krakowie
Churches of Kraków
Church (Roman Catholic), Bieżanów-Prokocim district.
History
The church on Agatowa Street on the Złocień estate, on the edge of Bieżanów, is one of the youngest Catholic churches in Kraków. It began as a chapel for the rapidly growing estate. Efforts to build it started in 2007, a year later the architects Janusz Wieczorek and Barbara Jońca prepared the design, and on 21 April 2009 work began on the foundations.
The building was still only a shell when, on 4 October 2009, Monsignor Tadeusz Dziedzic celebrated the first Mass in it. In 2010 the upper storeys were added and the roof was put on. In December of that year, a few months after Father Jerzy's beatification, his portrait was brought to the chapel. The year 2011 brought the electrical installation, interior plastering and the floor, and in 2012 the building was insulated. Finishing work continued until 2014.
On 15 August 2012 Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz established the parish by decree, and the chapel was officially named after Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko.
