Kościół pw. Matki Bożej Fatimskiej

Churches of Kraków

Parish church (Roman Catholic), Podgórze district. A parish is a community of believers tied to a particular church.

History

The Church of Our Lady of Fatima stands in Płaszów, on Mały Płaszów Street, and is a parish church run by the Priests of the Sacred Heart. The parish was created in 2012 by Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz.

The beginnings of the building are linked to foundation stones of special origin. During Mass on Kraków's Błonia meadows on 18 August 2002, a stone from the Divine Mercy Sanctuary in Łagiewniki, taken from the tomb of Faustina Kowalska, was blessed. Construction formally began on 5 March 2003. A temporary chapel, built in 2004, was opened and blessed on 18 November by Cardinal Franciszek Macharski.

Work on the church proper began in 2005 to a design by the architect Józef Dutkiewicz. It was blessed and opened for use on 13 May 2012 by Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz. Today the church serves the faithful from the streets of Płaszów, including the area around Mały Płaszów, Kozia and Grochowa streets.

The church's second foundation stone comes from the grotto of the apparitions of Our Lady in Fatima. John Paul II blessed it on 20 July 2003 after the Angelus prayer and personally signed a certificate confirming its authenticity.
