Churches of Kraków

Church (Roman Catholic), Dębniki district.

History

Skotniki was once a village near Kraków belonging to the parish of Tyniec. The villagers decided they wanted a church of their own and built it themselves in 1912-1915. The design was prepared by Feliks and Franciszek Starczyński. The church was blessed on 4 July 1915 by Fr Walenty Piotrowski, the parish priest of Mogilany. At first it was a chapel of ease of the Tyniec parish, and on 25 October 1921 a parish was established in Skotniki and the church became a parish church.

The building is neo-Gothic, with a single nave, built on the plan of a Latin cross entirely of brick. In 1997-1999 the church was extended with a transept and chancel, and its oldest part became the main nave. The whole building was covered with a copper roof, and in 2001 stained glass appeared in the side windows. Next to the church stands a bell tower with two bells, and on its eastern side is the parish cemetery, founded in 1919.

The first person buried in the Skotniki parish cemetery was Fr Ludwik Kippe, the first pastor in Skotniki.
