Churches of Kraków

Church (Roman Catholic), Podgórze Duchackie district.

History

The Neo-Gothic church on Cechowa Street stands in Piaski Wielkie, in the Podgórze Duchackie district. It is a historic parish church served by diocesan priests.

The parish was created in 1923. On 25 September of that year the foundation stone was laid, and the walls went up until 1927, to a design by the architect Kazimierz Brzeziński. Exactly four years after the stone was laid, on 25 September 1927, Bishop Stanisław Rospond consecrated the church. The formal establishment of an independent parish only came after 1948, when the parish priest, Father Franciszek Dźwigoński, had the guild's gift of land to the parish entered in the land register through the court.

Inside, the wooden high altar made of lime wood and the crucifix on the rood beam catch the eye, both the work of Wojciech Maciejewski. The stained-glass windows in the chancel were made to designs by Marek Różański in the Bracia Paczka workshop. The figure of Christ on the façade was carved in 1950 by Stanisław Napadło. The church has a fifteen-stop pneumatic organ from Biernacki's Kraków workshop, dating from 1952.

Did you know?

Until 2025 three bells hung in the tower, and today there are five: the largest, original bell from Karol Schwabe's foundry has been joined by three new ones cast in Italy.
