Kościół pw. Najświętszego Serca Pana Jezusa w Krakowie (Łagiewniki)

Churches of Kraków

Parish church (Roman Catholic), Łagiewniki-Borek Fałęcki district. A parish is a community of believers tied to a particular church.

History

The church on Millana Street began as a modest filial chapel of St Joseph's parish in Podgórze. In 1938 the residents of Łagiewniki set up a church building committee led by Jan Krzywoń. They asked the Felician Sisters, owners of Major Groyecki's former manor estate, to hand over the manor granary for use as a chapel, and the sisters agreed. The granary was converted, a chancel was added on the south side and a small tower was built. Cardinal Adam Stefan Sapieha blessed the new chapel on 12 June 1938 and celebrated the first Mass there. During the Second World War it brought together young people and older parishioners and was a mainstay of their religious and patriotic life.

The number of residents kept growing while the old granary was falling into ruin, so efforts to rebuild the chapel as a proper church finally succeeded in January 1971. It was designed by the architect Antoni Mazur. Work began on 12 December 1972. On 11 October 1973 Cardinal Karol Wojtyła blessed the foundation stone, brought from Wawel Cathedral, and set the founding act into the foundations; this took place on the feast of the Motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He also solemnly opened the finished church on 4 June 1978. The parish of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Łagiewniki was established in 1982.

Beneath the church is the Chapel of Our Lady of Myślenice. Cardinal Franciszek Macharski opened and blessed it exactly two years after the church was opened, on 4 June 1980. The painting placed there previously hung in the Łagiewniki manor house of Marcin Grubsza, castellan of Kraków.
