History

The Church of Our Lady of Lourdes stands in Nowa Wieś, in the Krowodrza district, at Misjonarska Street 37. Its history is linked to the Vincentian Fathers (the Congregation of the Mission), who were brought to Kraków in 1682 by Bishop Jan Małachowski. In 1861 the congregation set up a centre in Kleparz, which grew quickly. When there was no more room for new seminarians, it was decided to build a new house in Nowa Wieś.

The foundation stone of the church was laid on 25 June 1892. The church was designed by Stefan Żołdani in the neo-Romanesque and neo-Gothic style and was completed in 1894. It was consecrated on 16 July 1894 by Bishop Jakub Glazer and dedicated to the Immaculate Virgin of Lourdes. The church has three aisles, is 42.92 m long and 45.50 m high to the top of the cross on the tower. In the centre of the altar, designed in 1913 by Edward Kowalczyk, stands a faithful copy of the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes.

The parish attached to the church was established on 1 January 1923 by Archbishop Adam Stefan Sapieha. In 1929 a hospital of the Sisters of Charity was built next door, and since 1931 the Marian Choir has been active here.

The organ by Rieger Orgelbau (opus 513) was installed in the choir loft as early as 1895. After a rebuild in 1971 a few stops and part of the case remained from the old instrument, and the renovated organ was blessed on 17 May 1972 by Bishop Albin Małysiak, formerly parish priest here.
