Churches of Kraków

Church (Roman Catholic), Podgórze Duchackie district.

History

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross stands on the Kurdwanów Nowy estate in Podgórze Duchackie. Its story began in 1984, when Cardinal Franciszek Macharski sent a priest to the new estate to set up a pastoral centre and oversee the building of a church. Until then the estate had belonged to the parish of Wróblowice, and from 1983 pastoral care was provided by the parish priest of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus parish in Łagiewniki. The parish was established by a decree of 20 January 1990, and its first parish priest was Father Jan Mrowca.

Building permission was granted on 29 January 1986, but the main work did not start until 1989. From 1993 the liturgy was celebrated in the main nave, which was still left as a bare shell. The building was finished in 1998, and a year later the church received an organ. Finally three bells were blessed, and on 31 December 2001 Cardinal Macharski consecrated the church. It was designed by Olgierd Krajewski in a postmodern style. The parish feast day falls on 14 September.

Even before construction began, in April 1985 a cross was erected and blessed on the plot set aside for the church.
