History

The Church of the Most Holy Trinity in Płaszów, at Łanowa Street 1, belongs to the Trinitarians and is the church of their monastery. The order was founded at the end of the 12th century, and its rule was approved on 17 December 1198 by Pope Innocent III. Originally the brothers were to devote themselves to peacefully ransoming Christians from captivity, as well as supporting the poor, the sick and pilgrims.

In Poland the Trinitarians were revived in the 1980s, and Kraków became the second centre of the renewed community. At first they were taken in by the Resurrectionists. In January 2000 the brothers moved to their own house on Łanowa Street, and on 14 February that year Cardinal Franciszek Macharski blessed the chapel and the formation house there. The brothers' first religious profession took place in September 2001.

The Kraków monastery is now a formation house. The Trinitarians run a care home for the chronically ill here, as well as a student hostel for young men. They also minister to prisoners in the Kraków remand prison and its outlying unit in Nowa Huta. Next to the church stands the building of the Trinitarian Major Seminary.

Did you know?

According to the order's tradition, around 1193, during his first Mass, John of Matha saw Christ holding by the hands two chained captives, a Christian and a Muslim. He took the vision as a call to create a community that would peacefully free people from captivity.
