Kościół pw. Świętego Jana Pawła II (ul. Profesora Michała Bobrzyńskiego)

Churches of Kraków

Parish church (Roman Catholic), Dębniki district. A parish is a community of believers tied to a particular church.

History

The parish of St John Paul II serves Nowy Ruczaj, on Bobrzyńskiego Street. It began as a rectorate, established by Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz on 1 July 2011 by separating part of the area of the parish of Our Lady Queen of Poland in Kobierzyn. Five years later, on 13 May 2016, the same cardinal raised the rectorate to the status of a parish. To this day the faithful gather in a temporary wooden chapel, while the new church rises next to it.

By autumn 2024 the shell of the church was complete: the structure was standing, the roof over the naves and the sacristy was insulated and covered, and the façade, including the tower, was clad in clinker tiles. A cross was placed on the tower, and a bell named "Św. Jan Paweł II" (St John Paul II) was hung in it. The interior still awaits finishing and furnishing, and the building work is funded by donations from the faithful and support from the archdiocese. The community is already active: it runs the "Na Budowie" ("On the Building Site") university chaplaincy, as well as scholas (youth choirs), Living Rosary groups, a Bible circle and altar servers.

Parishioners raised the money to finish the tower and buy the bell in just seven months.
