Kościół pw. Świętego Rafała Kalinowskiego

Churches of Kraków

Church (Roman Catholic), Swoszowice district.

History

The Church of St Raphael Kalinowski is one of Kraków's youngest churches. It was built for the Kliny-Zacisze estate, which was growing very quickly. The parish was created on 1 January 2002 by Cardinal Franciszek Macharski, who carved its territory out of two neighbouring parishes: Our Lady Queen of Poland in Kobierzyn and St Hedwig the Queen in Swoszowice. Until 2003 all services were held in the church in Kobierzyn; that year a temporary chapel was blessed and the parish became independent.

Construction of the permanent church on Komuny Paryskiej Street began on 27 August 2008, after permits had been issued and the building site solemnly blessed. In 2009 the foundations and walls went up. In May 2011 Stanisław Dziwisz set the foundation stone into the wall of the porch. A year later the rooms in the basement were finished, and the heating and interior plaster were completed. From 3 February 2013 Mass was already being celebrated in the new building, and in January a granite and marble floor was laid there. The sound system, oak front doors and railings on the choir loft and stairs were also installed at that time. In 2014 the outside walls were plastered and the square by the church was paved.

In 2013 the section of Komuny Paryskiej Street where the church stands was renamed Bishop Albin Małysiak Street, and the church was given number 1. That spring the parish also hosted a copy of the Divine Mercy image and relics of St Faustina.
