Kościół pw. Świętej Marii Magdaleny (ul. Niebieska)
Churches of Kraków
Church (Roman Catholic), Swoszowice district.
History
The Church of St Mary Magdalene stands in Kosocice, in the Swoszowice district. The Kosocice parish is one of the oldest in the Archdiocese of Kraków: it was established before 1325 and re-established in 1948. The church was originally the parish church of the village of Kosocice, which became part of Kraków in 1972.
The present building, from 1932-1934, was designed by the engineer Jan Stobiecki, who also designed the high altar. The wall paintings were made in 1938, but the church was not consecrated until 1961, by Bishop Karol Wojtyła. In 2015 the church was renovated.
You can recognise it from afar by its tower with a pyramid roof. Inside, the altar shows Mary Magdalene kneeling at the feet of the crucified Jesus; it combines a relief with a mosaic. The Stations of the Cross are set in the windows as stained glass. On Juliusza Osterwy Street lies the parish cemetery, with the historic tomb of the Śliwiński family, landowners who owned Kosocice and Barycz.
