The Grey House
Trail of War
A historic building within the grounds of the former Plaszow camp, used during the war as the camp's punishment cell block. Today it is one of the few surviving structures of the camp.
History
The building stands at 3 Jerozolimska Street, next to the New Jewish Cemetery in Podgórze. Until 1939 it was the seat of the Jewish burial society Chevra Kadisha. In the autumn of 1942 a German forced labour camp was set up here, later a concentration camp, intended mainly for Jews. The Grey House ended up inside the Plaszow camp and served as a punishment cell for prisoners and an SS torture chamber; SS men also lived in it. After the war it was turned into council flats. Around 2014 the building was taken over by the Jewish community, in 2016 it was designated as a place of remembrance, and since 2021 it has been the seat of a separate institution, the KL Plaszow Museum.
