Studio Club

Kraków Artists: Music

A student club at Budryka Street 4, in the centre of the AGH Student Campus, run by the AGH Students and Alumni Foundation "Academica". The building was designed in the 1960s as part of the Student Campus (chief designer Prof. Tomasz Piotr Mańkowski) as one of its canteens, and in 2004 it was turned into a performance hall. In 2016-2019 the club underwent a thorough modernisation: the block was clad in Corten steel, and inside a multifunctional concert hall with high acoustic performance was created, designed by the architect Jerzy Stożek.

History

Klub Studio stands at 4 Budryka Street, right in the middle of the AGH Student Campus. The campus, built from 1964 onwards, was designed under the direction of Professor Tomasz Piotr Mańkowski as general designer. The building at 4 Budryka was planned as one of the campus's two canteens and served that purpose for many years.

In 2001 the university set up the AGH Students and Graduates Foundation "Academica". Three years later, in 2004, the university authorities handed the premises over to the foundation, which turned them into a performance venue for the student community and named it Klub Studio. In 2016-2019 the building was thoroughly rebuilt to a design by the architect Jerzy Stożek. Its stark, square form was clad in rust-coloured corten steel, and inside a multi-purpose hall with excellent acoustics was created. The structural engineer Wojciech Mucha joined the steel frame of the old canteen to a new reinforced-concrete shell. The west façade opens up to visitors, and the steps with benches in front of the entrance are a place for campus residents to relax and serve as stands during outdoor events. The hall holds more than one and a half thousand people, including more than 150 on the balcony and more than 190 in the tiered seating.

Artists who have played here include Lady Pank, Dżem, Kult, Riverside, Lao Che, Kwiat Jabłoni and Tomasz Stańko. Since 2012 Klub Studio has also hosted the Synestezje festival, which brings together music, visual art and the spoken word. The building is home to the Browar Górniczo-Hutniczy brewery, set up by AGH students, graduates and friends.

Did you know?

Works created specially for the Synestezje festival, or during it, have stayed in the club for good, so you can see them on every visit. The interior is also filled with sculptures, paintings and photographic reproductions from a planned permanent display.
