Pod Jaszczurami student club
Kraków Artists: Music
A student club operating since 1960 in the Pod Jaszczurką House at Main Market Square 8, one of the oldest student clubs in Poland. It is known for promoting artists from the Kraków student community and for championing jazz. Concerts, political debates, poetry evenings, film screenings, discos and exhibitions take place here, and plays are staged in the adjoining Theatre 38. Since 2001 the club has been run by the Kraków Institute of Art.
History
The Pod Jaszczurami club has been running since 1960 and is one of the oldest student clubs in Poland. It is housed in the Lizard House (Kamienica Pod Jaszczurką) at 8 Main Market Square, which has medieval roots. In those days it probably formed one larger building with the neighbouring Boner House. The house has a Renaissance portal and was entered in the register of historic monuments on 23 May 1932.
The club supports artists who grew up in Kraków's student scene and has long been associated with jazz. Its programme includes concerts, exhibitions, discos, film screenings, poetry evenings and political debates. Next to the club is Teatr 38, an experimental stage founded in 1957 on the initiative of Waldemar Krygier. The theatre moved into the house at 8 Main Market Square in 1959, and the years 1959-1968 are regarded as its heyday. Since 2001 the club has been run by Kraków's Institute of Art, which also looks after Teatr 38.
