Bronowice Cemetery
Kraków Cemeteries
A cemetery on Pasternik hill (Prądnik Biały district), founded in 1909 as the village burial ground of Bronowice Wielkie. People linked to the Young Poland movement rest here: the Tetmajer family, including the painter and poet Włodzimierz Tetmajer, who appears as the Host in Stanisław Wyspiański's play "The Wedding", and Jakub Mikołajczyk, the model for Kuba in that play. Members of the Rydel family, many old Bronowice families and seven holders of the Virtuti Militari order are buried here too. Please keep quiet, as it remains an active burial ground.
History
The cemetery on Pasternik hill in Bronowice Wielkie was opened in 1909 as the village cemetery of the local commune. It covers about 2.5 ha, and nearly 10,000 people rest here, including participants in both world wars and the struggles for independence. People connected with the Young Poland movement have left a particularly strong mark here. The Tetmajer family is buried here, among them the painter and poet Włodzimierz Tetmajer, whom Stanisław Wyspiański put into "The Wedding" as the Host. Also resting here are Jakub Mikołajczyk, the model for Kuba in that play, and members of the Rydel family. Seven holders of the Virtuti Militari order lie in the cemetery. The former section for soldiers of the First World War, registered by the Austrian authorities as war cemetery no. 389, was destroyed in the interwar period.
Did you know?
The cemetery is older than the local parish. Among those buried here were residents of Bronowice Małe, which at that time belonged to St Mary's Parish.
