Grębałów Cemetery
Kraków Cemeteries
One of the largest and youngest cemeteries in Kraków (Wzgórza Krzesławickie district), in use since 1 October 1964 and covering 25.5 hectares. Residents of Nowa Huta rest here, among them Piotr Ożański, a builder of the district and a labour hero, the model for Mateusz Birkut in Andrzej Wajda's film "Man of Marble". Victims of martial law, Bogdan Włosik and Ryszard Smagur, are buried here too. On one plot stands a monument from 1986 made of stone fragments of the Grunwald Monument destroyed by the Germans.
History
Grębałów Cemetery in Nowa Huta, in the Wzgórza Krzesławickie district, is one of the largest and youngest cemeteries in Kraków. It has been in use since 1 October 1964 and covers 25.5 ha. After being enlarged in the 1970s, it stretches from Kocmyrzowska Street to Darwina Street and to the fort in Grębałów, so there is no room left for further expansion. It is run by the Municipal Cemeteries Authority (Zarząd Cmentarzy Komunalnych), which has an administration building here with a Farewell Hall. Buried here is Piotr Ożański, a builder of Nowa Huta and a model worker, regarded as the prototype for Mateusz Birkut in Wajda's film "Man of Marble". The director Jerzy Ridan, the archaeologist Prof. Piotr Kaczanowski and the martial law victims Bogdan Włosik and Ryszard Smagur are also buried here.

The cemetery has two sections for members of ZBoWiD (the Union of Fighters for Freedom and Democracy). In one of them, in 1986, a monument was erected from stone fragments of the Grunwald Monument, which had been destroyed by the Germans.
