Kaplica pw. Najświętszego Serca Pana Jezusa

Wayside Shrines

Chapel, Prądnik Biały district. A chapel is a small place of worship, often beside a cemetery, hospital or a larger church.

History

This Modernist chapel stands in the grounds of the John Paul II Hospital at 80 Prądnicka Street. The original plans for the hospital, construction of which began in 1913, did not include a chapel. The cost estimate for building it was approved by the city's Presidium only on 8 February 1916, and the chapel was added to the administration building. The walls and ceiling are covered with Young Poland wall paintings, and the windows have stained glass. It is not known who designed the chapel - perhaps Adolf Szyszko-Bohusz or Franciszek Mączyński.

Did you know?

The future saint Sister Faustina Kowalska prayed here as a patient of the hospital - first in 1936-1937, and then again in 1938. After renovation the chapel was blessed by Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz, and a plaque by Czesław Dźwigaj commemorating her stay was set into the outside wall.
