Kaplica pw. Świętego Józefa (Zwierzyniec)

Wayside Shrines

Chapel, Zwierzyniec district. A chapel is a small place of worship, often beside a cemetery, hospital or a larger church.

History

Salwator Cemetery was founded in 1855 (until about 1970 it was called Zwierzyniec Cemetery). Until then funeral services were held in the Norbertine nuns' church in Zwierzyniec, and mourners had to walk quite a distance to the cemetery. That is why Abbess Eufemia Żarska funded a cemetery chapel dedicated to St Joseph. It was built in 1888 to a design by Sebastian Jaworzyński, on Jerzego Waszyngtona Avenue.

Did you know?

For more than a century the chapel served as the cemetery chapel; this changed only with the new All Saints' Chapel, opened in 1999.
