Wayside Shrines

Wayside shrine, Wzgórza Krzesławickie district. Wayside shrines were often raised out of gratitude, to commemorate events, or to ask for a safe journey.

History

The stone wayside shrine of St Stanislaus Kostka, dating from 1780, stands in Wadów, on the corner of Wadowska Street and Glinik Street. It is one of the historic structures that have survived in this former village, now part of the Wzgórza Krzesławickie district. At the junction of Wadowska Street and Za Ogrodem Street there is a second stone shrine, with an image of Christ Crucified.

Wadów was first mentioned in written sources in 1243. The shrine was built when the village belonged to Stanisław Kostka Gostowski (its owner in 1763-1783). In 1951 Wadów, together with the whole of Nowa Huta, was incorporated into Kraków. The Badeni manor house, surrounded by a park, has also survived here and has belonged to the city since 2017.
