STU Theatre
Kraków Artists: Theatre, Cabaret and Film
The Kraków STU Stage Theatre has operated since July 1997 as the continuator of the tradition of Theatre STU (Student Theatre Uwaga), founded on 20 February 1966 by Krzysztof Jasiński. It is based on Półwsie Zwierzynieckie at Zygmunta Krasińskiego Avenue 16-18. Until May 1980 the theatre had no permanent seat and performed, among other places, in the Pod Jaszczurami club, in a tent and in the synagogue on Kupa Street. In the 1970s it marked its presence in the worldwide counterculture movement with productions such as "Falling", "Polish Dream Book" and "Exodus".
History
The Kraków Scena STU Theatre has been running since July 1997 and continues the tradition of Teatr STU, the Studencki Teatr Uwaga (Student Theatre "Attention"), founded by Krzysztof Jasiński on 20 February 1966. It was set up on his initiative as an impresario-style venue, without a permanent company of performers. Since January 1999 it has been a municipal cultural institution. Its home is a building in Półwsie Zwierzynieckie, at Zygmunta Krasińskiego Avenue 16-18.
Until May 1980 the theatre had no venue of its own. Performances were held at the Pod Jaszczurami club, in a tent and in the synagogue on Kupa Street. In the 1970s Teatr STU became part of the worldwide counterculture movement with productions such as "Spadanie" (Falling), "Sennik polski" (A Polish Dream Book) and "Exodus", shown at festivals in Poland and abroad. In 1975 it was granted professional status, yet kept its independence and the atmosphere of an alternative theatre. Its collaborators included Jerzy Stuhr, Jerzy Trela, Jan Peszek, Marek Grechuta and Jan Sawka.
