History
Swedish Park lies in Nowa Huta, on the Szklane Domy estate, and covers 2.39 ha. The land once belonged to the village of Mogiła. According to the original plans it was meant to be built on, but for a long time it remained a nameless square with randomly trodden paths. Travelling funfairs set up their merry-go-rounds here, and demonstrations and marches took place. On its eastern edge the Church of Our Lady of Częstochowa and Blessed Wincenty Kadłubek was built between 1982 and 1994.
The square was given the status of a park in 2004. The name was proposed by the President of Kraków, Jacek Majchrowski, and approved by the District Council. A modernisation with new paths, benches and lighting was completed in 2007.
Did you know?
The name comes from the neighbouring "Swedish block", the first fully modernist block of flats in Nowa Huta. Its designer, Janusz Ingarden, travelled to Sweden to study the architecture there, and the walls were built of Siporex, an aerated concrete produced under a Swedish licence.
