Prof. Janusz Bogdanowski Fort 2 "Kościuszko" Park

Explorer of Kraków's Parks · no. 77

Park type: historic. In this park you can collect a stamp in the "Explorer of Kraków's Parks" campaign run by Kraków's Municipal Greenery Authority (ZZM). Where to find the stamp: just on the left once you have gone up to the mound; you will spot it straight away.

History

The park covers 15.1 ha within Fort 2 "Kościuszko", built in 1850-1856 around the Kościuszko Mound. Bastions I-III were destroyed after the war: the caponiers in the moat were partly blown up by the retreating German army in January 1945, and the bastions themselves were dismantled for their bricks. Restoration began in 2011 with archaeological research. The bastions were not rebuilt in full - only the well chamber and the right shoulder of Bastion II were reconstructed - but the remains of the fortifications were uncovered and protected. Educational trails about the fortress greenery and the fortifications were laid out, and the project cost almost 35 million złoty.
