History

Polish Airmen's Park, formerly the Park of Culture and Recreation, covers more than 42 ha on former fortress land. Redoubt fort 15 "Pszorna", built in 1864-1869, was demolished in 1951 during the construction of the main road to Nowa Huta. The idea for the park dates from the 1950s, but work only began in the mid-1960s. The first part, 8 ha, was laid out in 1966 and the rest by the end of 1969, to a design by the married couple Zuzanna Perchał-Filar and Leszek Filar. In 1989 the park was given its present name, and a monument to the airmen by Bronisław Chromy was unveiled in it. Since 2007 it has been home to the Stanisław Lem Garden of Experiences, and since 2018 also a new fountain and a skatepark.

Did you know?

Just after the park was laid out, when the trees had only just been planted, the hillocks left by the fort offered distant views to the south, all the way to the Carpathians.
