Emaus Dragon

Dragon Trail

The Emaus dragon stands in Jerzy Nowosielski Square on Kościuszki Street. It refers to the Emaus fair held on Easter Monday.

History

The Emmaus Dragon stands at Kościuszki Street 88, near the Rudawa riverside boulevards. He is playing with a wooden toy on a stick and holding an Emmaus tree. He is a reminder of Emaus, the fair held on Easter Monday. The custom comes from the Bible story of the village of Emmaus, towards which Christ walked after the Resurrection. In the time of the Counter-Reformation people visited a church outside the town on the second day of Easter. Zwierzyniec lay outside Kraków then, and the Norbertine convent was beautiful and close to popular outing spots, so that is where the people of Kraków began to go. The fair is still held by the convent today.

Did you know?

At the Emmaus stalls people buy, among other things, small sweet pretzels threaded on a string, which can be worn around the neck like a garland, and little trees with colourful bird figures.
