Kazimierz Dragon

Dragon Trail

The dragon stands by the main entrance to the Kazimierz Gallery, next to the playground.

History

Kazimierz the Dragon runs along with shopping bags in his paws, and he stands in the courtyard of Galeria Kazimierz at Podgórska Street 34, on the Vistula side. The brick buildings he glances at are more than one hundred and fifty years old. In 1878 the municipal slaughterhouse was built here to a design by Maciej Moraczewski; it was the first large-scale industrial plant in what was then Grzegórzki. The slaughterhouse closed in 2003. Two years later the complex, where a modern building stands beside the renovated old ones, took on a new role: a shopping centre opened there. The dragon was funded by the shopping centre itself.

Did you know?

The architect of the slaughterhouse, Maciej Moraczewski, was the father of a future prime minister of the Second Polish Republic. The dragon was unveiled on 11 June 2024 by Andrzej Mleczko, who designed it.
