The athlete dragon stands in Zbigniew Brzeziński Square on Piłsudskiego Street.
History
The Sportsman Dragon holds a hula hoop. It stands on Zbigniew Brzeziński Square at 27 Piłsudskiego Street, opposite the building of the "Sokół" Gymnastic Society. The Society was founded during the partitions and promoted gymnastics, hiking and paramilitary sports, and its halls were also centres of patriotic activity. The building opposite was designed by Karol Knaus and extended by Teodor Talowski, who gave it neo-Gothic features. It has served sportspeople since 1889, with breaks: in 1947 it was seized by the Security Office, and the Society did not get the building back until 1990.
Did you know?
According to the city's description, the falcon (sokół) in the Society's emblem was a disguised national emblem. The Scout greeting "Czuwaj!" comes from the Sokół movement.
