Dragon with a Map

Dragon Trail

A dragon holding a map guards the entrance to Kraków Park from Inwalidów Square.

History

The Dragon with a Map stands in Marek Grechuta Kraków Park, at a junction of paths on the Inwalidów Square side, wondering which way to go. The park covers 4.8 hectares. It was founded by the entrepreneur, restaurateur and city councillor Stanisław Rehman, modelled on the Viennese people's gardens, and opened in 1887. Among other things it had a summer theatre, a café, a bowling alley and a small menagerie. During the Second World War air-raid shelters were built in it, and they are still hidden under the greenery. It was revitalised in 2016-2018, and that is when it was named after Marek Grechuta.

Did you know?

The park has 19 abstract sculptures of concrete, stone and metal, which makes it an open-air art gallery. There was also once an open-air swimming pool here, which was turned into a skating rink in winter.
