Imperial-Royal Soldier Dragon

Dragon Trail

A dragon in the uniform of the former Austro-Hungarian army stands by Bastion V "Lubicz" at the Mogilskie roundabout.

History

The Imperial-Royal Soldier Dragon stands guard by Bastion V "Lubicz" on the Mogilskie roundabout. It has a Mannlicher rifle, magazines in the ammunition pouches on its belt, a backpack and a cap from the days of Kraków Fortress. It guards the remains of the bastion: some survive as walls, others are only marked out on the surface of the roundabout. The bastion was built in the 1860s and very quickly became obsolete; it served as barracks and later only as storehouses. In 1950 the fort was demolished and its remains buried. Fragments were uncovered in 2004-2008, when the roundabout was rebuilt.

The size of the former bastion is best seen from the 25th floor of the nearby Unity Centre office building.
