Kryształ Fountain
Kraków Fountains
Fountain, Stare Miasto district. It stands on the Main Square and replaced an earlier fountain designed by Wiktor Zin, nicknamed the "couch" (kanapa), which was dismantled in September 2005 during renovation work. That earlier fountain found a new home in Jerzmanowski Park, which is also on this trail. The fountain is lit.
History
The "Kryształ" ("Crystal") fountain was installed on the Main Market Square in 2010. It realised the design that won a competition held in 2008. The structure has a quadrilateral base and triangular sides, so it resembles a pyramid. The fountain is fitted with lighting: after dusk, colourful light scenes change across it. The bottom is glazed, so you can look through it into the underground exhibition of the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków and see a model of medieval Kraków.
Did you know?
Kryształ's predecessor was the fountain by Prof. Wiktor Zin, popularly known as "Zin's sofa". It stood on the Market Square from 1964 to 2005, when the square's surface was rebuilt and archaeological research was carried out there. After restoration in 2020 it was moved to Jerzmanowski Park.
