Fountain on Plac Biskupi

Kraków Fountains

Fountain, Stare Miasto district. Plac Biskupi is the popular name of the wide Biskupia Street, which lies on the site of the former jurisdiction of Biskupie - lands that belonged to the Bishops of Kraków. The square's redevelopment was completed in early February 2022. The fountain was set in the urban part of the square nearest Krowoderska Street, beside benches and decorative lighting. In 2022 the eastern part of the square was named the Free Ukraine Square (Skwer Wolnej Ukrainy).

History

Biskupi Square is the popular name for the very wide Biskupia Street, which lies in the area of the former Biskupie jurydyka, a private estate outside town jurisdiction. Even before Kraków received its town charter in 1257, part of this land belonged to the bishops of Kraków. At the beginning of the 21st century an informal car park took up a large part of the square. No underground car park was built: the city opted for regeneration instead, and the work lasted from 2019 until early February 2022. The fountain was built in 2021 in the part of the square closest to Krowoderska Street, next to benches and decorative lighting. It softens the city climate, and after dark its illumination brings the square to life.

Did you know?

Until 1965 the eastern part of the square was occupied by a wooden municipal barrack from 1891. From 1893 to 1956 it housed the St Adalbert Primary School, and later the 10th Secondary School.
