Kraków Murals

Mural, Stare Miasto district. Artist: Pil Peled. Painted in 2013. A mural is a large painting made directly on the wall of a building.

History

The Judah mural was painted in 2013 by the Israeli artist Pil Peled during the Jewish Culture Festival. Together with the Broken Fingaz mural from 2014, it is meant to remind people all year round of the Jewish identity of Kazimierz. The design refers to the festival's new logo, the Lion of Judah, designed that same year by Studio Otwarte. The artist invited volunteers, festival guests and passers-by to help paint it. The mural quickly became one of the important landmarks of Kazimierz and gave its name to the square where it was painted, which is now the most popular food truck spot in the district.

Did you know?

Pil Peled explained that the child next to the lion stands for a small, frightened nation, and the lion for strength. The mural is also meant to remind us of the child inside each of us.
