Kazimierskie Murale Historyczne
Kraków Murals
Mural, Stare Miasto district. Artist: Piotr Janowczyk;Magdalena Gajewska. Painted in 2015. A mural is a large painting made directly on the wall of a building.
History
At Józefa Street 17, five blind arches are decorated with large portraits of figures connected with the history of Kazimierz. The design and execution are the work of Piotr Janowczyk, a street artist. The murals fill arches that had previously been neglected and marked by vandalism; they have been on view since October 2015. They were created as part of the second edition of Kraków's Civic Budget.
On the wall you will see Casimir the Great, founder of the town of Kazimierz, the legendary Esterka, Karol Knaus - an architect and builder from Kazimierz, Helena Rubinstein, known as the "Empress of Beauty", and Emperor Joseph II, a reformer and the street's namesake. The muted colours - beiges, greys and gold - are meant to blend in with the façades of the neighbouring buildings.
