Krzysztof Komeda

Kraków Murals

Mural, Grzegórzki district. Artist: Kamil Kuzko. A mural is a large painting made directly on the wall of a building.

History

The mural at Kopernika Street 22 commemorates Krzysztof Komeda, whose real name was Krzysztof Trzciński - a jazz pianist and composer and a pioneer of modern jazz in Poland. The 2023 painting is by Kamil Kuzko.

Komeda was born in 1931 in Poznań and was an ear, nose and throat doctor by training. He came to Kraków to play music at the urging of the bassist Witold Kujawski; jam sessions were held in Kujawski's small Kraków flat, attended by Matuszkiewicz, Borowiec and Walasek among others, at a time when playing jazz in public was banned. In 1956 he founded his own sextet, and he wrote music for 65 films, including Roman Polański's "Rosemary's Baby".

Did you know?

Komeda adopted his pseudonym for his stage performances in order to hide his love of jazz from his superiors and colleagues.
