History

Silva Rerum is a huge mural on the retaining wall of Lasota Hill on Powstańców Śląskich Avenue, near Kraków Krzemionki station. It was created in 2007 to mark the 750th anniversary of Kraków's town charter and tells the story of the city from the earliest times to the present day. The graphic design was prepared by Jerzy Rojkowski, then a student at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts, and the idea was submitted by the Zooteka agency in a competition for the anniversary events. It was commissioned by Kraków City Hall. Painting began on 7 May 2007, and the official opening took place on 8 June on the Krakus Mound. The work is 5 metres high and 90 metres long - in May 2007 it was probably the largest historical mural in the world. The paint was applied by a dozen or so leading graffiti artists, among them Dean, Malik, Turbos, Mehes and Merazster.

Did you know?

The mural's name refers to old chests in which documents and records were kept - they were called silva rerum. The creators wanted the wall to become a similar time capsule holding more than a thousand years of Kraków's history.
