Sójka
Kraków Murals
Mural in the Bieżanów-Prokocim district showing a bird species (Polish name: Sójka). It is one of about a dozen bird murals in this area. A mural is a large painting made directly on the wall of a building.
History
A jay looks out from the gable wall of the block at 4 Spółdzielców Street on the Na Kozłówce estate in Kraków. The mural was painted in 2019 as one of seven pictures added to the "Birds" series at that time. It was made by the painter Wojciech Rokosz, a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. The series shows the wild birds of the estate and grows whenever gable walls are renovated, and the cooperative pays for the paintings out of its own other income. The cooperative counts the jay, together with the chaffinch, among the better-known birds, alongside rarer visitors such as the bee-eater.
Did you know?
The cooperative stresses that the series is the first initiative of its kind in Kraków, and that photos of the birds have been record-breakingly popular on Facebook.
